Advice on biology-related issues must be enhanced. We are achieving this by developing new methods of consultancy and research that concentrate on the management of fisheries activities rather than on the management of individual fish stocks.
Furthermore, models are being developed for better assessments of the consequences of different management initiatives such as closure of fishing areas, temporary bans on fishing, or changing the mesh size of fishing nets.
We are examining and developing new methods, too, which will meet the future demands on fisheries management to take account of the marine ecosystem and financial and social consequences of new regulation.
