Resumé
Speciation can, in theory, be initiated by adaptation to divergent environments followed by the accumulation of additional barriers to gene exchange. There are now many examples of local adaptation maintained by divergent selection in the face of gene flow but there is no consensus on how some such interactions lead to speciation while others do not. The snail Littorina saxatilis is an excellent model in which to tackle this problem. It has direct development, leading to low vagility and strong local adaptation, particularly to contrasting environments dominated by crab predation or wave action. I will describe ongoing work on the genetic basis of local adaptation and barriers to gene exchange in this system.
