Community consequences of bottom trawl fisheries in demersal food webs

Daniel van Denderen, Wageningen UR, Netherlands talks on "Community consequences of bottom trawl fisheries in demersal food webs" in the so-called Kaffeklubben at DTU Aqua. Kaffeklubben arranges seminars presenting recent research within aquatic sciences. Guests are welcome.

Abstract

Bottom trawling is a special kind of fisheries in the sense that its direct impact goes far beyond the impact on its target species, or even beyond effects on fish. The net effects of bottom trawling are hence the outcome not only of the direct effects of trawling, but also of a number of indirect food web interactions between invertebrate groups in the benthic community and the fish. In this presentation,

I will show the effects of trawling on benthic diversity, biomass and community composition in a range of habitats. Afterwards, I will discuss how trawling may affect feeding conditions for target fish. The implications of these effects will be related to the ecosystem-based management of demersal fisheries in general and the role of marine protected areas in particular.

About Kaffeklubben

DTU Aqua’s so-called Kaffeklubben (The Coffee Club) arranges seminars presenting recent research on various topics across aquatic sciences, hence contribution to knowledge sharing in DTU Aqua.

The lectures are held by scientists from DTU Aqua or from other research institutes in Denmark or abroad. The audience consists mainly of employees at DTU Aqua, but others are welcome to participate. Registration is not necessary

The seminars are in English and last one hour. They take place at DTU Aqua in Charlottenlund, Copenhagen.
