Tuesday, 18 April was the first working day at Lyngby Campus for many of the 650 employees from DTU Aqua, DTU Food, and DTU Vet, who are now moving closer together. The three departments will occupy buildings 201, 202, and 204 which is DTU’s largest building complex of currently 42,000 m2.
The buildings will house a significant part of DTU’s life science and bioengineering activities and provide the framework for a unique academic environment. The building will house laboratories, offices, conference rooms, teaching facilities, and canteen and café areas, which are intended as areas of social interaction for this part of DTU Lyngby campus.
A hub on campus
Life science and bioengineering is an area seeing strong growth. The industry is estimated to have total annual exports of DKK 107 billion, and today accounts for 17 per cent of total Danish exports. It is a field in which DTU will increasingly operate. That is one of the reasons why DTU is bringing together the experts and expanding its facilities, so that the University also in future can deliver world-class research.
Yet another building under construction
Most of the buildings in the complex are ready for occupation, but—as appears from the activities in the area—yet another building is in the pipeline, i.e. Building 205A, intended for veterinary research and expected to be completed at the end of 2019. Until then, the area will remain a building site.
The actual building site will, however, be covered by a large tent, a ‘SiteCover’, so that the entire site is ‘wrapped up’ during the construction period. SiteCover is a new cost-effective solution enabling construction work in all kinds of weather, thus ensuring a more efficient construction phase. The SiteCover solution has only been used twice before in Denmark, so this is yet another thing that makes the building project something special. - Construction period: 2014–2019.
- Area: Approx. 50,000 m2 of both new construction and conversion work.
- Budget: DKK 1.4 billion.
- The complex consists of the new Building 202 of 27,000 m2, which is linked by walkways to the two existing buildings 201 and 204 of 7,000 m2 each.
- Also, north of these buildings the new Building 205A for veterinary research will be constructed. The building is approximately 8,500 m2 distributed on two basements and four floors above ground. It will be completed in 2019.
