DTU Aqua invites applications for a Research Scientist position in fish biology with focus on aquaculture-related experimental research on early life history of marine species. The position is affiliated with the Fish Biology Research Group within the Section for Living Marine Resources.

DTU Aqua is a dynamic international academic environment spanning research, education, innovation and public-sector consultancy within aquatic sciences. The Department attends to all types of aquatic habitats addressing sustainable exploitation and management of aquatic living resources, conservation of freshwater and marine ecosystems as well as aquaculture technology development.

Our Section for Marine Living Resources focuses on fish biology, population genetics, statistical stock assessment models, and bio-physical modelling from an individual organism to the more complex system. Here, the Fish Biology Research Group generates new knowledge about developmental characteristics and physiological requirements of fish throughout their life history. We use our results to provide insights into population dynamics and ecosystem functioning, conservation biology, and aquaculture innovation.

We seek an ambitious candidate with capability in experimental research to advance our understanding of physiological requirements of marine fish larvae in culture including ambient conditions, nutrition, etc. Good communications skills are important combined with a strong motivation to work in a dedicated, multidisciplinary team. 

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will consolidate and expand basic and applied knowledge in particular on fish early life history and eco-physiology. Overall, the researcher should employ laboratory experiments as part of integrated studies in hatchery technology and aquaculture innovation. Initially, the position relates to a research and innovation project “Improve technology and scale-up production of offspring for European eel aquaculture” (ITS-EEL) targeting the development of hatchery technology for European eel. Here, the scientific work will address early life history and larval culture technology. The project is performed in collaboration with the aquaculture industry. 

Responsibilities and tasks in ITS-EEL include work-package leadership related to the development of enhanced fertilization protocols and the development of embryonic and larval culture technology. Here, experimental studies and research tasks focus on the influences of abiotic and biotic factors on development, growth, and survival. This includes (among other tasks) dedicated physiological, behavioral and morphological studies to identify tolerance limits related to rearing conditions as well as feeding experiments to determine nutritional requirements for first feeding and larval growth.

The researcher will have the responsibility to statistically design and conduct experiments. Analytical tools may include the use of molecular techniques, immunohistochemistry, high-resolution digital recording and image analysis using advanced software. The research combines data and information from multiple disciplines to gain in depth insight towards creating the comprehensive technology for closing the life cycle of eel in aquaculture. Here, innovative skills are important, as the area requires new solutions and integrated studies at the cutting edge between basic and applied research.

Involvement in application for national and internationally funded research and innovation projects, contributions to project coordination and management, as well as supervision of students is anticipated.

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) with focus on early life history of marine fishes.

The key qualification requirements are as follows
  • In-depth knowledge of marine fish physiology and ontogeny
  • A stronghold in experimental research and statistical tools
  • Experience with studies of fish early life history and eco-physiology
  • Capabilities in molecular approaches, such as gene expression
  • Significant publication record within the field
Relevant knowledge and/or experience in any of the following topics will be positively considered
  • General aquaculture practice and hatchery technology of marine fishes
  • Larval nutritional physiology, growth, and behavior 
  • Practical experience with fish reproduction, incubation and larval culture
  • Internal vs. external drivers of reproductive success and offspring performance
  • Research project funding and coordination

  • The ability to promote and utilize research results

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU

The position is available from July 1, 2018. The primary workplace is at DTU Aqua in Lyngby, while extensive experimental work will be conducted at research facilities located in DTU Aqua’s premises in Hirtshals.
