A PhD Scholarship in nutritional physiology of fish is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) to commence during the fall of 2018. The scholarship is financed partly by DTU as a joint alliance project between DTU and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), further supported by DTU Aqua. DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark.

The project will primarily be carried out at the Section for Aquaculture, which is located in Hirtshals in the Northern part of Jutland. The candidate will also be affiliated with the Department of Biology under the Faculty of Natural Sciences at NTNU; Trondheim, Norway. The candidate is therefore required to spend part of his/her time in Norway. The supervisors will be Associate Professor Peter V. Skov and Senior Research Scientist Ivar Lund at DTU Aqua, and Professor Rolf-Erik Olsen at NTNU.

Project description
The inclusion of marine oils in diets for salmonid fishes has decreased by more than 50% in the past 20 years. In order to become ASC certified, fish farmers must reduce their forage fish dependency ratio, which further drives the increased use of plant oils in commercial diets. The different fatty acids that make up a lipid source serve a multitude of biological functions, such as structural components of cell membranes, metabolic substrates for metabolism or as precursors in the synthesis of signalling molecules. The overall aim of the project is to identify effects of replacing marine lipids with terrestrial lipids. The candidate is expected to investigate in particular whether lipid source and composition is a determinant of digestibility, and to what extent this is reflected in markers of lipid digestion, how it influences lipid uptake and incorporation, and what the ultimate effects are on growth, metabolism and fuel use. These questions are to be addressed through a series of experiments determining digestibility of diets with different lipid sources, activity of lipid digestive processes, growth and feed conversion, whole animal metabolism including respiratory and nitrogen quotients, fatty acid composition of fish tissues, and cellular respiration.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has: 

  • M.Sc. Eng. or M.Sc. degree in Aquaculture, Aquatic Science & Technology, Biology, or similar;
  • A strong interest in the nutritional physiology of fish and bioenergetics of fishes;
  • Previous experience in experimental work with fish;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Keen interest in laboratory experiments and for working at the interface of basic and applied fish physiology.

Approval and Enrolment

Assessment of the applicants will be done by Associate Professor Peter V. Skov, and Senior Scientist Ivar Lund, DTU Aqua.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The applicant must be able to start no later than 1 December 2018.
