New collaboration with China

A delegation of directors and scientists from the large research organisation Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science visited DTU Aqua in Charlottenlund on October 27^th and 28^th 2014. During the visit, Vice President Dr. Yingjie Liu, Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science, and Head of Department Fritz Köster, DTU Aqua, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutes.

Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science, which is a sector research organisation under the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, is a huge institute compared to Danish standard. The Headquarter of the organisation is located in Beijing and in total there are nine institutes and four research stations around China. The Institute has around 3000 employees.

Head of Department Fritz Köster, DTU Aqua says:

”Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science is an interesting partner for us. The institution covers a broad range of classical marine and freshwater fisheries research and aquaculture, and is focusing on development in technological areas of fisheries technology and population genetics. There are a number of research areas in which it would be relevant to collaborate, e.g. in sustainable utilisation of fisheries stocks, protection of biodiversity and aquatic ecosystems, aquaculture technology and fisheries policies.”

The MoU was signed on Tuesday October 28^th at the end of a two days seminar, where Chinese Academy of Fisheries Science and DTU Aqua presented and discussed their respective research activities.

In addition to identification of research topics, the agreement also entails exchange possibilities for students and scientists. The first CAFS PhD student, Sophia Xu (Jiayi Xu), starts on December 1^st at Centre for Ocean Life with DTU Aqua Professor Thomas Kiørboe as main supervisor. The PhD project is about poisonous algae and the zooplankton grazing the algae.
