About DiscardLess

DiscardLess is funded by the European Commission's Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. The consortium has 31 partners from 12 countries and is led by DTU Aqua.

More information about DiscardLess can be found at the project webpage discardless.eu

New video: Project coordinator and Professor Clara Ulrich, DTU Aqua, and two other project scientists describe the purpose of the international research project DiscardLess, and explain some of the basic concepts and issues regarding discards in marine fisheries.

The landing obligation in the new EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) aims for a gradual elimination of discards of commercially exploited stocks on a case-by-case basis. The international research project DiscardLess (Strategies for the gradual elimination of discards in European fisheries) unites experts across Europe and North America to explore how the landing obligation can be implemented in a way that is sustainable for both fishermen and marine resources.

In a new video, Project Coordinator and Professor Clara Ulrich, DTU Aqua describes the purpose of the project and explain some of the basic concepts and issues regarding discards in marine fisheries:
"Our role as scientists is to document and analyze the data and to contribute in this way to the discarding debate. For example: What impact does discarding have on the ecosystem? Who eats discarded fish when they are thrown over board? Are technical solutions developed in one region useful somewhere else? What are the economic and social costs and benefits of different solutions? Are these solutions socially acceptable by the fishermen?"
