Applications are invited for a position as professor in the research field Fisheries Management. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Ecosystem-based Marine Management, with workplace in Kgs. Lyngby.

The Section conducts research on the direct and indirect effects of fishing and other anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. The aim is to develop knowledge and tools for use in an evidence-based ecologically and economically sustainable management. Research in marine habitats concerns the importance of different habitats for fish stock dynamics. Fisheries technology addresses the efficiency, selectivity, and environmental impact of the fishing process. The aim is to reduce unwanted bycatch of fish, marine mammals, or seabirds and the impact on the marine environment, while improving the efficiency and competitive abilities of the fishery.

Research in Fisheries Management creates the scientific basis for advice on effects of management measures, such as limits to the amount of fish landed, closed areas, and multiannual management plans and for determining their likely effects on the ecosystem and the value of the fishery. Research in Ecosystem effects of fishing focuses on the quantitative analyses of indicators and reference levels for the interaction between fisheries and marine mammals, seabirds, and benthos and the contribution of these and other indicators to Good Environmental Status under the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive. It further addresses the interactions between the ecosystem, fisheries, and other maritime activities providing the basis for advice on reducing conflicts between and the management of marine ecosystems and maritime activities.

Responsibilities and tasks
The professor’s research field is to advance our understanding and quantification of fisheries dynamics and management in European and Arctic areas, and to enhance research and development on integrated bio-economic fisheries management evaluation tools. The aim is to further develop methods to evaluate the effects of fisheries management measures aiming to reduce the impact on the marine environment and optimize fisheries performance. An important focus is the application, implementation and coordination of multidisciplinary research activities linking fisheries and environmental science, statistical and modelling approaches and using innovative methods to improve the effectiveness of fisheries management. The research is conducted in a combination of analyses of fisheries dependent and independent data.

The professor is expected to take the lead of the research group Fisheries Management. As research group leader, the professor is responsible for coordinating the research vision and strategy of the research area. Taking leadership in planning and implementing international and national multidisciplinary research projects and coupling these research activities and generated scientific results to advisory activities, is a further focus.

The successful candidate is expected to take a lead role in teaching at BSc, MSc and PhD levels. In particular, a lead in development and coordination of the BEng in Fisheries technology (a new curriculum mostly taught in Sisimiut, Greenland) is expected.

For international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold an internationally recognized track record on:

  • Integrated fish stock and fisheries assessment and management evaluation with different levels of available data
  • Development and application of simulation models taking into account fisheries dynamics, efficiency, behaviour and the impact of climate and environmental change on marine living resource dynamics
  • Teaching in the research area on university level as well as experience in development and implementation of university educations and courses

Employment requires innovative research at high international level, including visionary strategic development of the research area. The successful candidate should have experience in leadership of multidisciplinary research groups and research projects financed by acquired external research grants. The professor should have experience in teaching and curriculum development at different academic levels, including supervision and training of PhD students and postdocs. Finally, the candidate is expected to have extensive experience in giving advice on fisheries and environmental management to policy and management authorities.

In the assessment of candidates, particular consideration will be given to:

  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership and collaboration
  • Communication skills

Consideration will also be given to:

  • Scientific production and research potential
  • Ability to lead and develop a multidisciplinary research team
  • Acquire, implement and coordinate externally financed international research projects
  • Ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation
  • Capability to promote and utilize research results in management advice

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

DTU Aqua provides research, advice, and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms, and the dynamics of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management.
