Applications are invited for a position as Post doc targeting research, public sector consultancy and innovation in shellfish production and fisheries and coastal ecology. The position is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with work location at the Danish Shellfish Centre (DSC, Nykøbing Mors, Denmark).

The DSC conducts research, gives advice and fosters innovation in sustainable farming, fishing and industrial processing of shellfish and seaweed. This is achieved by exploiting coastal natural living resources for the benefit of local communities, seafood industry and the environment. Research addresses different aspects of shellfish and seaweed biology, ecology and production including e.g. environmental impact of shellfish production, ecology of coastal areas in relation to food production, long-line cultivation of mussels, oyster hatching, effects of invasive species and pests on shellfish and seaweed production, prawn and crab fishery and development of equipment to provide a sustainable production. DSC covers research addressing coastal zone ecology with special focus on the interactions between exploitation of shellfish/seaweeds and the aquatic environment, in relation to both impact assessments and advice on sustainable management. DSC is located at Nykøbing Mors with modern research, experimental and developmental facilities and has a close cooperation with industry, research institutions, organizations and universities.

Responsibilities and tasks
For this position we are looking broadly within the Danish Shellfish Centre work area in order to advance our understanding of shellfish ecology and biology in relation to production and utilisation including environmental interactions with focus on bivalves. This includes i) improving our understanding of the ecological role of shellfish and impact of shellfish production in coastal areas; ii) developing our understanding of the impact of invasive species and shellfish diseases in coastal areas; iii) developing economical and ecological sustainable methods for production of new lower trophic level species; iv) evaluation of management plans and technical measures allowing sustainable shellfish fisheries and aquaculture. The research is done in a combination of analysing data acquired from field and laboratory experiments, data from public and fisheries monitoring as well as data from commercial productions utilising modelling techniques in an interlinked approach. Innovative skills are important, as the area requires new solutions.

The Post doc is expected to improve the capacity of the institute for conducting relevant research within the field, giving advice to managers of fisheries and environment, policy makers and other relevant authorities as well as foster innovation in cooperation with the industry. The Post doc is furthermore expected to be actively engaged in writing applications to both national Danish and international funding agencies as well as participating and being in charge of existing projects at the Danish Shellfish Centre. The Post doc will if relevant contribute to teaching in the master education Aquatic Science and Technology, and supervise master students as well as participate in the daily operations of DSC for dissemination and education.
