DTU invites applications for a position as professor in the research field of marine technology and observation. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua), Section for Oceans and Arctic, and is based at DTU campus in Kgs. Lyngby, but with activities at all of the institutes’ locations and on its research vessels.

You are is expected to lead the development of the research unit Observation Technology, which is a multidisciplinary unit aiming at integrating traditional marine observation methodologies with modern acoustics, optics, image, and data analyses to support the research of the Institute in cooperation with other departments of the university. The position requires skills in attracting external funding from national and international foundations in order to secure the future development of the group.

The collaborative approach allows for technology development, implementation of modern data analyses methodology, and model development, handling the fast-increasing data availability in the context of ocean management. The aim is to enhance the information available for marine research and evidence used for scientifically based advice issued to national and international authorities, to push innovation in marine observation industry, and contribute to teaching at DTU whose goal it is to offer Europe’s best engineering education.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Leading the research unit on observation technology requires extraordinary capabilities in scientific and strategic as well as human and other resource management with the aim of building up a strong research group, helping to develop both other research areas and the institutes technical support functions. A strong focus on attracting external funding is a necessary prerogative for the professor. Another prominent task will be to contribute to the design, building and equipping of Denmark’s new ocean and arctic going research vessel.

Your research field and working area include:

  • Contributing to the development and implementation of autonomous ocean observing systems as well as systems allowing for adaptive and augmented observation and sampling while in operation.
  • Bridging the gap between fast developing observation capabilities, analytical tools for data analysis, including machine learning and integration of this information into models applied to describe marine environmental status and dynamics.
  • Providing innovative concepts, systems and technology in support of integrated marine ecosystem assessments, including numerical models spanning across various ecosystem components considering different external drivers, such as climate change.
  • Linking different disciplines across oceanography, analysing big data, ecological modelling, sensor development and deployment as well as marine automatization to train a new generation of marine scientists exploiting innovative approaches for ocean observation and ecosystem assessments.

You are expected to give advice on the development of the marine research and innovation agenda to funding and ocean management organizations, e.g. the EU commission, as well as the industry.

Results should be disseminated in peer reviewed publications and dedicated outlets aiming to inform management authorities, stakeholders, and the public at large and foster national and international collaboration.

You are expected to take a lead role in teaching at the BEng, BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
