The National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU Aqua, invites applications for a two-year post doc position in fish habitat mapping with emphasis on modelling biological knowledge, stock development and connectivity.

The post doc will join the section for Ecosystem based Marine Management in Copenhagen. The department has 35 employees and focuses on interdisciplinary research improving our understanding of marine ecosystems and how they are managed. It offers an internationally recognised and highly dynamic scientific environment. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the research groups on marine habitats and ecosystem effects of fishing and work in close cooperation with the section for Marine Living Resources.

Responsibilities and tasks
The research tasks will focus on further developing methods for mapping fish habitats at different life stages and applying these methods for providing fisheries advice or for integrating this information in marine spatial planning. It is important that the results, including the methods developed, are widely accepted and used. The candidates are expected to conduct research and disseminate research results in peer reviewed scientific journals and technical reports as well as provide scientific advice to public authorities, participate in international working groups, communicate with stakeholders and contribute to development of DTU Aqua’s internal and external cooperation.

We are looking for innovative and independent applicants, with good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a team and a committed and positive attitude.

The candidate must: 

  • hold a PhD degree or equivalent in marine fish biology or ecology
  • have experience in research on fish habitat modelling or fish distribution modelling,
  • have scientific research experience, production and potential within the work areas described under responsibility and tasks above.
In the assessment of the candidates, particular consideration will be given to: 
  • scientific production and research potential within the research area,
  • international experience and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • strong data analytical skills and experience in statistical modelling of fish distribution data
  • experience in programming in R, matlab, or Python,
  • experience in conducting fieldwork to provide data,
  • experience in contributing to international advisory work,
  • ability to communicate at all levels and experience in provision of scientific advice to public sector authorities and local stakeholders,
  • ability to work independently and in teams with scientists from different scientific disciplines as well as non-scientists.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 2 years.

Place of employment will be at DTU Aqua, Section for Ecosystem based Marine Management, Kemitorvet, 2800 Lyngby.
