On 14 January 2020, Kristian Schreiber Plet-Hansen will defend his PhD thesis at DTU Aqua, Lyngby.

PhD Student Kristian Schreiber Plet-Hansen has examined how data from the commercial fisheries can be improved. With the recently implemented EU landing obligation a need for improved data collection methods has arisen, especially for fisheries control purposes. The landing obligation requires all catches of regulated commercial species to be landed, including the share of these that would previously have been discarded.

Kristian Schreiber Plet-Hansen concludes that both electronic monitoring of catches and the use of existing traceability systems, which are not used in the fisheries control today, provide opportunities for improved fisheries data—both for management and science. Additionally, the data can potentially assist fishermen in adjusting their fisheries to improve selectivity and hence catch less of the unwanted fish species and sizes.
