Researchers at DTU Aqua have developed a method that can document fishery electronically. Public authorities as well as environmental organizations and fishermen consider the method as a good tool for developing sustainable fisheries, says the profile magazine of the Technical University of Denmark , DTU in Profile
Marine fish are a limited resource. Therefore future fishery must be carried out in a more sustainable way. This requires fully documentation of the catches and researchers at DTU Aqua have recently developed a method that can document fishery electronically.
The fishery is documented by cameras mounted on the vessels, and by registering all catches electronically. The documentation may provide the public authorities with accurate and detailed information about the amount and the composition of the catches and the discard.
Fully documented fishery may eventually provide the basis for a new type of fishery management based on catch quotas. When management is based on catch quotas each fisherman is responsible for all the fish he gets on board, because all fish - whether above or below the minimum size - count on the quota.
