On 15 March 2024, Xiaoyu Huang will defend his PhD thesis. The defence can be followed online or attended in person at DTU Hirtshals Campus.
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) redefine fish farming by using closed-loop water treatments to efficiently recycle water. This setup allows RAS to cope with the growing global demand for fish production and increasing environmental regulations.
To ensure fast fish growth and proper fish welfare, RAS water quality should be kept at optimum conditions. Fish feed is the primary source of nutrient input into RAS and understanding the relationship between feed and water quality is crucial.
During his PhD project at DTU Aqua, Xiaoyu Huang examined the effects of feed on physicochemical water quality and microbiology in recirculating aquaculture systems. In experimental trials at DTU Aqua’s pilot-scale RAS facilities, he addressed important aspects of feed composition: carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content as well as feed dust.
Overall, Xiaoyu Huang concludes that his trials substantiate that fish feed affects water quality and microbiology in recirculating aquaculture systems. The results highlight the potential benefit of using low phosphorus diets, manipulating the carbon-nitrogen ratio in feed, and reducing the amount of feed dust.
