Effects of chemically dispersed crude oil on marine zooplankton

Rodrigo Almeda, DTU Aqua talks on "Effects of chemically dispersed crude oil on marine zooplankton" in the so-called Kaffeklubben at DTU Aqua. Kaffeklubben arranges seminars presenting recent research within aquatic sciences. Guests are welcome.

Abstract

Crude oil (petroleum) pollution in marine environments is a growing environmental problem due toincreasing petroleum industry activities in the sea. Among the biological components of marine ecosystems, zooplankton are particularly susceptible to marine crude oil spills. However, little is still known about the interactions between zooplankton and dispersed crude oil despite the important roles of planktonic organisms in marine ecosystems. In this presentation I will show some of the main results on crude oil zooplankton interactions from my postdoc research at the University of Texas.

Specifically I will talk about the following topics:

  1. lethal and sublethal effects of chemical dispersants and dispersed crude oil to marine zooplankton
  2. influence of UV radiation on the toxicity of crude oil to zooplankton
  3. bioaccumulation of PAHs in copepods and gelatinous zooplankton
  4. role of crude oil ingestion by zooplankton in the fate of crude oil spills in the sea.

About Kaffeklubben

DTU Aqua’s so-called Kaffeklubben (The Coffee Club) arranges seminars presenting recent research on various topics across aquatic sciences, hence contribution to knowledge sharing in DTU Aqua.

The lectures are held by scientists from DTU Aqua or from other research institutes in Denmark or abroad. The audience consists mainly of employees at DTU Aqua, but others are welcome to participate. Registration is not necessary

The seminars are in English and last one hour. They take place at DTU Aqua in Charlottenlund, Copenhagen.
