Havfisken on a survey in the Kattegat
During the survey, the research vessel collects data on the cod stocks.
From 23 November to 4 December 2026, the research vessel Havfisken will collect data on the distribution of cod in the Kattegat. The survey is conducted once a year and is a collaboration between DTU Aqua and SLU Aqua at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. In total, surveys are carried out at 80 stations, 40 of which are conducted by DTU Aqua aboard Havfisken.
What data is collected?
The survey gathers data on the distribution of cod by fishing at designated stations. The survey targets slightly larger cod, and trawl with a 70 mm codend is used during the survey.
Biological data on length, age, and weight are recorded. In addition, genetic analyses are performed on a selection of the caught cod to determine how many belong to the North Sea stocks. Hydrographic data, including oxygen and temperature conditions, are also collected to help explain the distribution of fish stocks.
How is the data used?
The results from the expedition are used in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea's (ICES) biological advice on the cod population in the Kattegat. This advice is aimed at authorities who use it as a basis for setting fishing quotas and other regulations for fisheries.
Where is Havfisken now?
