About Havfisken
Havfisken is essentially a modern commercial steel fishing vessel equipped for research and monitoring in coastal areas.
The research vessel Havfisken is in the Kattegat and Baltic Sea to collect data on fish stocks in the inner Danish waters.
From 15 October to 4 November 2024, Havfisken is on the Kattegat Survey (KASU) in the Kattegat and Baltic Sea. The dates of the cruise may change slightly.
The survey is conducted twice a year in Q1 and Q4.
The purpose of the cruise is to describe the distribution of fish stocks in the Kattegat, Øresund, Great Belt, Little Belt and the western Baltic Sea. Data is collected by experimental trawling. Hydrographic data is also collected, including oxygen conditions.
The length of the fish is measured. Random samples of the catches are also weighed, and biological samples are collected to determine the age and sexual maturity of the fish.
DTU Aqua uses these cruise data to assess the status of fish stocks. Data from the western Baltic Sea (ICES areas 22 and 23) is also included in ICES' assessment of the status of fish stocks in this area, supplementing the data collected by the research vessel Dana during the Baltic International Trawl Survey (BITS).
The results are used, among other things, to advise authorities, who use them as a basis when setting fishing quotas and other rules for fishing.
