Mette Munkholm Svantemann, DTU Aqua, will defend her PhD thesis "Development of decision support tools for commercial fisheries and for fisheries monitoring using in-trawl cameras and automatic image processing" on Tuesday, 17 December 2024 at 11.00.
You can attend the defence online on Teams via this link or in person at DTU Hirtshals Campus, Willemoesvej 2, 9850 Hirtshals, R100/R101.
Mette Munkholm Svantemann’s PhD thesis focuses on methods to reduce unwanted bycatch in trawl fisheries. Most bycatch reduction devices designs use special mesh panels in the trawl where bycatch can escape. Mette Munkholm Svantemann has tested whether incorporating a dark tunnel in front of an escape opening can make fish escape more easily. In addition, the PhD thesis introduces a bycatch detection tool using machine learning to analyze images from an in-trawl camera in near real-time. This tool alerts the fisher to the presence of bycatch and transforms the fishing process from a blind to a more informed process. Furthermore, Mette Munkholm Svantemann introduces a method to extract lengths of catch objects from stereo imaging from underwater cameras.
