Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Stock Structure, Migration, and a Changing Canadian Fishery

Michael Stokesbury from Acadia University i Canada talks about "Western Atlantic Bluefin Tuna Stock Structure, Migration, and a Changing Canadian Fishery" in the so-called Kaffeklubben at DTU Aqua. Kaffeklubben arranges seminars presenting recent research within aquatic sciences. Guests are welcome.

Abstract

Atlantic bluefin tuna are large, highly migratory fish that are fished commercially and by charter in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

I will discuss how we have worked with the Tag-A-Giant program of Stanford University and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans to help defined the stock structure, environmental preferences and migration pathways of Western Atlantic bluefin tuna.

Also I will discuss the new Canadian catch and release charter fishery for Atlantic bluefin tuna in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, including experimental determination of a post-capture and release survival rate and establishment of regulations to reduce capture stress on fish.
