Farming technology
DTU Aqua's research in aquaculture farming technology focuses particularly on recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and end-of-pipe water treatment.
Aim
DTU Aqua research in aquaculture farming technology aims to ensure efficient production with minimum environmental impact. The research focuses in particular on recirculation technology, biofiltration, water treatment, and environmental efficiency in onshore facilities with freshwater as well as saltwater.
Research focus
Chemical and microbial water quality
Over the past decade, recirculation technology has reached a mature stage with commercial applications worldwide. The industry's focus is shifting toward water quality parameters and ways to control and regulate them. Therefore, DTU Aqua's aquaculture research will increasingly address chemical and microbial water quality, microparticles, and their impact on fish and system performance.
End-of-pipe treatment and waste valorizing
End-of-pipe treatment and methods to reduce discharge of nutrients and organic matter discharge are also areas of growing interest and concern. Methods that not only remove but also valorize waste will become increasingly important to support sustainability and contribute to a circular economy in the sector. DTU Aqua aims to develop a comprehensive model to estimate discharge from fish farms given specified technologies, dimensions, and design as well as operating parameters.
Water quality and fish welfare
Research into the relationships between water quality parameters, fish and water microbiota, and fish physiology and welfare will also be strengthened.
Industrial implementation
Denmark holds a strong national position in recirculation technology, and DTU Aqua's aquaculture group has played an active role in achieving this. Examples of industrial implementation include the transition of the Danish industry to semi-intensive recirculation systems with increased production and reduced environmental impact, as well as recent developments in intensive recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) and end-of-pipe water treatment.
