Resumé
Atlantic bluefin tuna are large, highly migratory fish that are fished commercially and by charter in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
I will discuss how we have worked with the Tag-A-Giant program of Stanford University and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans to help defined the stock structure, environmental preferences and migration pathways of Western Atlantic bluefin tuna.
Also I will discuss the new Canadian catch and release charter fishery for Atlantic bluefin tuna in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, including experimental determination of a post-capture and release survival rate and establishment of regulations to reduce capture stress on fish.
