Section for Coastal Ecology

Focus areas

The research covered by the Section for Coastal Ecology includes: 

• Sustainable use of coastal-zone resources including low trophic aquaculture and blue biomass.
• Anthropogenic impact on coastal ecosystems and ways to mitigate these impacts.
• Restoration, monitoring, and condition assessment of marine habitats.

We work primarily in the coastal zone, i.e. estuaries and coastal waters.

The results of the research are largely translated into practice through advice to public management and the industry.

The section contributes to teaching in the MSc Programmes Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture  and Ocean Engineering .

Location

The section is located in Nykøbing Mors at the Danish Shellfish Centre and at DTU Lyngby Campus. 

Facilities

In Nykøbing Mors, we have excellent research facilities, including a state-of-the-art multi-purpose hatchery, a commercial-scale grow-out facility for testing methods for producing mussels, oysters and macroalgae, as well as several research vessels and equipment for marine monitoring.

In addition, we run an outreach facility where children and the general public can learn about estuarine biology and ecology and experience seafood production.
